Great Women Artist / PHAIDON 2019

Great Women Artists brings together the work of over 400 artists from more 50 countries, spanning 500 years. Selected to represent the widest range of visual art, it also tells engaging stories of the lives of artists: historic women who were successful in their own lifetimes but whose art was excluded from written accounts in the centuries that followed; those who found way to train as professional artistic despite being excluded from formal education in art academies; women whose artistic careers were overshadowed by their artist husbands, partners, fathers or brothers; those who created art for decades but only gained recognition and broad variety of media – from painting and sculpture, to photography, video, performance and installation.

Each artist’s entry is illustrated by one iconic artwork and accompanied by short introductory text. Arranged from A to Z by surname, this is a book that can that can be enjoyed from cover to cover, or dipped into at random: each page revealing a compelling story of a pioneering artist.

With a title that responds to the provocative and still-influential 1971 essay by art historian Linda Nochlin, ‘Why Have There Be No Great Women Artists’, this extensive volume is a bold celebration of female creativity throughout time, encouraging readers to embrace all those who have been overlooked or undervalued.
