“Art is a Game, a Serious and Sometimes Dangerous Game”
Juan Xu, born in Chengdu, Sichuan, is an independent curator and art critic with a strong international presence. A graduate of the University of Tübingen in Germany, she has successfully bridged cultural and artistic dialogues between China and Europe. Juan Xu is notably one of the founding members of the Chinese feminist art group “Bald Girls,” through which she has passionately championed Chinese feminist art and women’s rights issues.
Since 2012, she has curated several provocative and groundbreaking exhibitions under the “Bald Girls” banner—including “A Door,” “Timelag,” “Pink Solution” and “Chain Reaction”—that challenge societal norms and spark critical conversations about gender and power. In 2013, she expanded her curatorial scope by co-organizing the exhibition “Social Sculpture—Beuys in China” in collaboration with the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum, further cementing her role as a figure in contemporary art discourse. Her 2018 curatorial work on the large-scale Frankfurt exhibition “Capital@Art·International” is among many international projects that highlight her dynamic and interdisciplinary approach.
In addition to her curatorial achievements, Juan Xu serves as the artistic director of the Wiesbaden/Frankfurt Performance Art Festival and holds the position of chairman at the German Arts Networking Association (IO Cultural Network e.V.). Her career is marked by a dedication to exploring the transformative and sometimes perilous nature of art—a game that is both playful and profoundly serious.
